Nervous System is a 4 year project from start to finish. Starting from the page, it was written to push against the edge of what two filmmakers might be able to achieve without the use of a crew or AI.

Once a 69 page script had been completed, the process of scouting for a location took about a full year. Driving around the country viewing cabins in the middle of nowhere is not the least time consuming task for two people. At the same time, a lot of research, practice and rough hands went into figuring out how to execute the myriad practical effects featured throughout Nervous System.

Once principal photography began, the film was shot across a series of weeklong trips to the filming location in Kentucky. Between each trip, more practice would be needed to create the digital effects that augment the practical ones. In this way, the film was largely edited as it was being shot, a week’s worth of footage at a time.

Throughout all of this, a 19-minute score was written to complement the tone of the visuals. This was done entirely in GarageBand without the aid of additional musicians.

To call Nervous System a large undertaking would be a bit of an understatement, but at the end of the day one thing can and should be said: “It’s only a movie. It’s only a movie. It’s only a movie.” And hopefully a terrifying one.
